Recent Works

The recent work gallery contains work which I am currently working on. The theme of the work is portraits and was begun in April 2009. The portraits are made of friends and neighbours and these paintings and drawings are not portraits produced to make a literal likeness of my subject, but rather an attempt to capture the essence of the person or group of people and create a sense of life, energy and movement. These are expressionists paintings and drawings which when executed, an emotional experience rather than a physical reality is suggested. Keep your eye on this page, new work will be added. The Archives Gallery

In the archives gallery you will find a number of works produced over a period of years from the late 70s and early 80s up until the present. The paintings vary in media, style and technique as I have attempted to develop my own language of expression. The copies of some of the old masters (of which only a few are included here) have been a great learning process in my development as a draughtsman and painter, and I owe these old masters a great debt, and I am still learning. Some of the paintings are dated but others are not, I may be able to give an approximate date later. I hope that you have a good time in the gallery. 

The Childhood Series

In this gallery you will see a series of paintings I started in 1988 and finished in 1992. These paintings partly tell the story of my early childhood days growing up in Guernsey and then moving on to the mainland and living in Halifax for a short period of time.

Some viewers may find some of the images a little disturbing, however that was not the intention when they were created, neither were they produced as some kind of art therapy to attempt to heal some kind of inner hurt. I found that creating these pieces was a very challenging process, for example it took me approximately one year before I discovered the appropriate language and media, and before I even began to execute my first finished piece. The whole series took several years to complete but was a very enjoyable series to work on.

Archive Drawings up to 2000

In this gallery you will find a selection of drawings produced over a number of years up until the year 2000. Unfortunately I do not have a large selection, this is simply because over the years up until 2000 I was in the habit of looking through my sketchbooks and paintings and if pieces of work were not what I thought satisfactory then they were  immediately thrown out. At one point of discouragement in my art work I remember giving away at least 70 or more paintings away to people who I knew, I remember ringing them and telling them to come over to the studio and take what they wanted. So regrettably now I only have a handful of pieces. Anyway I hope you enjoy what you see and compare these pieces with the more developed and recent works.


Recent Drawings from 2000

All the drawings in this gallery are from the year 2000 and up to the present. These drawings as you will see are progressive in expressive application and emotional response, again  I am developing my personal expressive language as a draughtsman. Also you will see recent drawings in the 'Recent Works Gallery',  Keep your eye on this page as new drawings will be added.
